What is Name Day?
It is an old European tradition. Every day of the
year is someone's Name Day. People all across Europe have been
celebrating their first names for centuries in the same way you celebrate your birthday.
Why should you celebrate?
Just ask yourself this simple question: How many people know your first name?
Can you imagine this group of people
coming over once a year to shower you with gifts and throw you the best
party you have ever encountered?
All in celebration of your Name Day. In effect, it is like having a second birthday. And yes, nobody will ask you about your age! |
Where is Name Day celebrated?
Europeans not only have birthdays, but Name Day as well. Birthdays are usually celebrated just in immediate family. Name Days, however are widely known and celebrated. Each first name is assigned to one day of the calendar, based on religious traditions, historical events, birthday of a famous person who had the same first name, or on other facts.
For example, the church feast of Saint Michael is held on September 29th, and as a result the Name Day for Michael is on September 29th. In some countries (Greece) Name day is more important than birthday. Gifts include flowers, chocolate, bottle of good wine etc.
My friend has a Name Day. What should I do?
You wish a person Happy Name Day, and buy a present like flowers or a box of chocolates. So Now You know what a name day is. I laughed a lot because I found out that my name day is one day before my brothers birthday. And his is ten days after mine.
So Lisa is the 19th of November and his, well the English version of his name is the 10th of July.
Mum; your name Erica is the 18th of may so very close to your own birthday.
Some popular names have even more then one name day for example the name Asia because in Poland that is a very popular name. But also because there is a Greece has his own dates. My Greece name date would be the 24th of April. (Sometimes the dates are different in different country's, there are 21 European country's who suppose to use the name days)
Cool so I have an extra excuses to trow up a party :) (not that I need one for that but still) :P
Maybe I will find all my friends coming on one of these dates because some how they are always to busy or cannot make it or sick or whatever. This would make it easier for sure. haha.
Today a very happy name day to: Mark (Ukraine) & Jan (Poland)
Are you curious too? Check your name day;

And why not, why not an extra reason to celebrate your life and who you are? I think it is a good idea to celebrate name days too because there are already enough happy Un-birthdays. And I don't mean the stupid people sitting on there asses and waiting for the birhtdayperson to come and serve them. I mean being nice, having a party, having fun together. Do it potluck or just simple be together and drink something.
I don't personally like birthdays so much because no one Really seem to care about you, just come for their free piece of cake and coffee leave and always forget or didn't have the time to bring it.. And only talk about their selves. But now I've learned that it is not always like this. Because it can be just having fun with does who actually give a damn. So from now on For does who actually give a damn I like to invite you for my name day party the 15th of November (because it is the 19th but that is not in a weekend) Only If You want to come. Don't do it for me, It is gonna be great for sure. :)
So today I've taken it easy, visited a 2 churches, bought some postcards, had a really nice Ice cream in 3 tastes; Brownie, CarrotCake & Red Velvet which was actually good. :) Their were bikes everywhere but I probably lived underneath a stone because I don't know why or what it was. Tour de Pologne and Mini Tour de Pologne races thank you internet, now I know. :P
It was really crowded.
Oh Oh and Frances you said that thing about the teddybears: look what I found! :P Scroll down now ;)
It felt almost as good as one of your (or my mums) royal hugs ;) :)
Morgen Naar Wenen!
